'Augmented Reality Interactive Environment System' (ARIES) is exploring how located media can enhance awareness of incidents and situations for personnel in urban environments and remote command centres. ARIES is a collaborative research project which is 50% funded by the Ministry of Defence.
The primary aim of the this project is to develop a proof of concept demonstartor that can provide enhanced situational awareness to ground personnel and Command Centres using multiple fused information and data sources.
The use of a virtual reality replica of the environment enables the Command Centre to better understand the intricacies of the terrain and the location and status of monitored personnel and resources. Location specific information such as anticipatory tasks and requests can be easily created and delivered to ground personnel in a controlled and managed way. Information 'dropped' at a location by ground personnel can also be selected and viewed easily.
The system facilitates the creation, sharing and provision of spatialised information and knowledge to ground personnel. The system also provides personnel with enhanced situational awareness in the form of warnings, guidance and help at the right time using augmened reality technologies that overlays information onto a view of the real-world scene.
